This may be the last blog for a couple of weeks. I’ll be leaving in a day or two for a music tour in Colorado, eventually returning to more of the same in Texas. I’ve been getting in the mood for this for a few days now. Last Thursday, I had a great gig at the Famous Fuel Coffee House with award-winning songwriter and recording artist Mike Blakely. It was a standing room only crowd and we got a standing ovation at the end of the performance. Blakely brings out the best from anyone who is on stage with him.
Speaking of the Famous Fuel Coffee House, the third Thursday of the month Songwriters in the Round show is gaining a huge reputation as a favored place to perform. Great songwriters from across Texas and elsewhere, including Europe, are inquiring about the possibility of performing there. In August, one of the featured songwriters will be Darrell Staedtler whose work has earned him five gold records. He’ll be joined by dynamic young songwriter Jake Martin, a Luckenbach favorite. I have the wonderful job of hosting.
Yesterday we enjoyed a full day of music at Luckenbach listening to Walt Wilkins, Susan Gibson, and others. I even got a play a bit, and arrangements are being made for some more Luckenbach appearances.
In Colorado we’ll be performing in Gunnison at the Palisades on the 8th and 15th of August. One of my favorite places to play, the Palisades also has great food and drinks. We look forward to our visits to Gunnison; there exists a viable and energetic literary community there and it is the home of Writing the Rockies, the great writing conference held every summer.
On the 10th we’re at the Diamond RV Park in Woodland Park. Don’t laugh – this great RV park hosts some wonderful performances on their outdoor stage throughout the season, provides a great turnout, and we’ve always come away happy, fulfilled, and a bit wealthier. Since one of the campground hosts is noted cook Roger Mears from Marble Falls, Texas, we also get to eat well. In truth, it’s always a feast. In addition, we’ll get to see a bunch of old friends, including the noted poet and writer, David Mason.
The following Tuesday, I’ll have a long lunch meeting in Colorado Springs with my agent where we will line out projects for the coming year.
I’ll get back home to Texas just in time to host the August 20th Songwriters in the Round plus perform a couple additional gigs. After that, we start getting ready for the great Mike Blakely’s Tex-Americana music festival in Luckenbach on the second weekend of September. Check it out at luckenbachtexas.com – it’s a great line-up.
Wow, you are one busy man. I didn't realize how much I could learn about the music scene simply by checking out your blog. Thanks for taking the time to write about yourself and your life on the road.
