Texas Treasure Show 2010, Day One

Texas Treasure Show 2010, Day One
by guest blogger Laurie Jameson

This is my fifth time to attend the annual Treasure Show, Convention and Hunt sponsored by the Texas Council of Treasure Clubs with my husband W.C. Jameson. Months before the event he sends in the paperwork to pay for a booth and makes motel reservations. The week before we leave he begins to gather and pack a selection of his books. Lastly, he services the truck. My role on the morning that we leave: I pack my own clothing, make a basket of road-trip snacks and bring along magazines to read!

Once we reach Longview, Texas, on Friday afternoon my job really begins. I'm in charge, gladly, of setting up the book table, complete with colorful serape cover and the backdrop signage that advertises: W.C. Jameson, Treasure Hunter, Author. I have great fun arranging two dozen titles, making sure that the newest releases are at the front and center. This year WC offered a special deal--for every three books and/or cds purchased a copy of his new chapbook "A Professional Treasure Hunters Guide to Metal Detecting Sites" is given for free. The Treasure Show doesn't officially open until Saturday morning but collectors and friends from past gatherings drop by to say hello and many make their book purchases immediately before some titles sell out.

By nine on Saturday morning we are back at our booth and ready to greet a slow but steady stream of lookers and buyers. While WC discusses tales, legends, possibilities and probabilities surrounding dozens of caches, I keep track of the book sales and chat with the women. We play WC's music on the Mac laptop and that generates interest in his cds. Many people are surprised that he is a singer/songwriter/performer as well as a writer and treasure hunter. Throughout the day there are seminars on gold prospecting, beginning and advanced metal detecting, competition hunting, and valuing your finds. Scott Mitchen, author of the young adult novel Will of the Pirates, speaks about international exploration and Garrett Metal Detectors.

One of the best things about the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview, Texas, is the extensive gardens surrounding the building. When things inside the convention center get too hectic for me, I leave WC alone at the book selling booth and go outside into the sunshine and fresh air to sit by the pond or walk among the beautifully landscaped flower beds. Then after many minutes of solitude and quiet I am ready to rejoin the joyous fray of Treasure Council Clubs, Metal Detector Companies, Professional Treasure Hunters and all manner of folks coming to check out the displays and seminars. If the hunger bug strikes, a snack bar offers coffee, soft drinks, hot dogs, bbq beef sandwiches, chili, Frito pie, chips, popcorn and candy bars. Instead of indulging there, however, W.C. and I munch on apples, cheese, pretzels, almonds, chocolate and ginger from my infamous snack basket.

Mid-afternoon book collector and treasure enthusiast Jim F. stops by to visit WC and I listen in as they discuss the merits of mapper.acme.com compared to google earth, as well as the website scribd.com. Jim is keen on giving WC marketing and distribution suggestions, both things that he knows about a great deal. At five p.m. WC slips away for a half hour to listen to underwater explorer and treasure hunter Carl Fismer, who is also the keynote speaker for the evening's BBQ Banquet. By six we have covered WC's booth and closed down for the day. It's been fun and profitable, but we are definitely ready for some alone time. We find supper at Joe's Pizza, Pasta and Subs (good food and a great waitress), then retreat to our motel room for a television movie.
