Colorado Tour, Part One

I just returned from one of the best concert tours I’ve ever had.

I set out from Llano, Texas on the morning of August 6 with Laurie Wagner Buyer, the famous poet, memoirist, novelist, and editor. The day before we left, the temperature was 109 degrees F. I had a full schedule of concerts and LWB’s schedule was filled with writing workshops and seminars along with consulting with several of her clients.

On arriving at our first stop in the cool and beautiful Gunnison, Colorado, we moved into the home of our great hosts, Jim Swaim and Missy Kizer. Missy is a poet and writer and Jim does pretty much everything. On this leg of our travels, he served as cook and bartender and put together some quality meals.

Also staying at their home for a few days was Susan Stoltz, publisher of my recent book Want to be a Successful Writer? Do This Stuff. Susan is also a writer and poet and in addition publishes the magazine Women Out West. Around 7:00 a.m. on the morning after our arrival the temperature was 28 degrees! I stepped outside with a hot cup of coffee and watched three Vs of geese flying across the sky. There was frost on the windshield of the truck.

I hadn’t been in Gunnison more than twenty-four hours when I bought a bicycle. Jim had a new one and was extolling its virtues and how much fun it wa to ride. No sense in him having all the fun, so I asked him to accompany me on a shopping trip into town. At the Tune Up, a serious bike shop, owner Rick fixed me up with a cross bike – ½ road and ½ mountain. It was perfect. We got back to the house and took off for a ride. I’m now riding every day.

The concert on Saturday night, August 8, was at the Palisades in Gunnison, one of my favorite places to perform. Owners Jeff and Scott have provided for a great restaurant, bar, and place to play music. I’ve performed there often, and each time it gets better. I played several tunes from my CDs, a couple of requests, and tried out some new songs. I had more fun than I deserved. I was accompanied by my vocal back-up group, the Strumpettes, featuring Laurie, Missy, and Susan. They never sounded better, and their choreography improves with every show.

After the show we visited a while, adjourned to the house, visited some more, and turned in. The next morning we left for Denver to attend a Shakespeare performance. We stayed with the writer Kathy Sutton at her new condo. It was like being in a luxury hotel. The next day, we were off to Woodland Park for a few days – another show, a visit with my agent, and reconnecting with more writers and friends.

More about that stop on the next blog.
