As a result of having had more than sixty books published along with all of the attendant publicity and notoriety, I am often asked by beginning writers how they can find a publisher for their work.
The best advice I can offer is to suggest to them that they attend a good writers’ conference wherein editors and agents are featured speakers. It is good if the editors are associated with prominent and successful publishers, but editors connected to smaller and university presses also have much to offer. In addition, I like to see agents who can boast prominent writers as clients.
Since these are the people who are instrumental in helping writers – beginning as well as advanced – find publishers for their manuscripts, it would serve you well to listen closely to what they have to say about all aspects of the publishing industry.
If possible, make an appointment to speak to these editors and agents. At many conferences they make themselves available for short interviews and book pitches. Other times, you may get lucky and catch them at a lunch or dinner table or at the bar where you can converse with them on a variety of subjects. I have seen dozens of book deals made at conferences and conventions at informal gatherings and visits such as these. In fact, I owe the publication of at least ninety percent of my books to contacts I made at writers conventions and conferences.
As I write this, two excellent conferences come to mind. One is the Ozark Creative Writers Conference that is held the second week of October each year in beautiful Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This year’s conference will feature magazine and book publisher Susan Stoltz, New York literary agent Doug Grad, and Pat LoBrutto of LoBrutto Editorial Services.
These people have been instrumental in getting many prominent authors published, and it is always enlightening to hear them speak. In addition, the conference attracts prominent authors, poets, songwriters, and many others. Make reservations now as it fills up rapidly.
Another excellent conference is Writing the Rockies, held each summer in Gunnison, Colorado. WtR has become an important and growing annual conference that features editors, writers, agents, screenwriters, filmmakers, and others. Check out the internet site.
As I wrote in my book Want to be a Successful Writer? Do This Stuff, there are a number of additional advantages for beginning writers to attend conferences such as the ones I’ve mentioned here. Not only can valuable contacts be established that may lead to a significant contract, there are contests to enter, panels and discussions to attend, and functions whereby you can meet and visit with other writers and people in the business.
