Billy the Kid: The Lost Interviews

After having been declared missing for more than a half-century, the taped interviews with William Henry Roberts, the man a number of researchers and investigators have determined was the outlaw Billy the Kid, have been found and are now available in a recently released e-book titled Billy the Kid: The Lost Interviews by W.C. Jameson.

The lost interviews were originally heard in 1949 by only two men – folklorist and scholar Dr. C.L. Sonnichsen and para-legal William V. Morrison. Morrison, who conducted the interviews, was approached by several researchers who wanted to listen to them. Having been badgered and ridiculed by these same men only months earlier for casting doubt on Sheriff Pat Garrett’s account of the alleged killing of the famous outlaw, he refused. During the following decades, repeated efforts to obtain the tapes were rebuffed by Morrison’s descendants. Skeptics suggested they never existed.

Then, in 1992, they were located. The full story behind the discovery of the tapes, as well as the complete transcriptions of the interviews can at last be read in Billy the Kid: The Lost Interviews. The e-book can be obtained by via the ad on this website.

Why an e-book? Recent observations have shown that e-books are more easily attainable than hardbacks issued from a publishing company. In addition, an e-book can be downloaded at a cost much less than the price of a hardback or trade paperback book. So, in the spirit of making the book as available as possible and offering a savings appealed to our sensibilities.

The notion that the outlaw Billy the Kid was not killed by Garrett and went on to lead a long but not particularly happy life has been perpetuated by several investigators over the years. The most complete and up-to-date collection of research and evidence for advancing the hypothesis that Roberts was Billy the Kid is found in Billy the Kid: Beyond the Grave (Author W.C. Jameson, Taylor Trade Publishing, 2005). This book presents compelling and straightforward evidence that Garrett did not kill the Kid, that Garrett lied about the event, and that the outlaw lived out his life more or less in hiding until he died in 1950. The evidence was reviewed by prominent investigators, handwriting analysts, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, prominent lawyers, and trial judges.

The defenders of the traditional Billy the Kid story have directed several attacks at Beyond the Grave, but none have offered a reasoned or intelligent response to any of the documentation contained therein. At one point, a sponsor offered $10,000 to anyone who could prove that William Henry Roberts was not Billy the Kid. While there was a lot of grumbling, name-calling, and criticism among the defenders of the historical status quo, none came forward to discuss any aspects of the evidence presented in Beyond the Grave.  Likewise, when challenged to meet in a television, magazine, or newspaper forum to debate the topic, or to contribute to a book on the subject, all either declined or declared they were unavailable. This, of course, runs counter to the manner in which credentialed and reputable historians and researchers conduct themselves.

Now, adding to the existing evidence that Roberts was, in fact, the famous outlaw, are the long-lost taped interviews that relate aspects of his life as the Kid. In his own words, Roberts provides deep and amazing insight into the Lincoln County War, the siege of the McSween House, the escape from the Lincoln County jail, the alleged killing of the Kid at Fort Sumner, and his amazing life after fleeing New Mexico.

It was said of Roberts that he knew too much not to be the Kid. An illiterate man who could barely read or write, Roberts possessed keen insight into Billy the Kid, related people and places, and Lincoln County War events that were unknown to the so-called historians of the day.

Now, you can read the original words of William Henry Roberts, AKA Billy the Kid, in Billy the Kid: The Lost Interviews.

I am so thrilled that this information is finally available.  I gobbled up every word of this compelling story.  The ebook format works well for this subject matter (nicely designed as well).  Thank you so much for continuing to bring new evidence to light and for helping us all understand the truth behind the story of William Henry Roberts and Billy the Kid.
