Colorado Tour, Part Two

We arrived in Woodland Park, Colorado, on Monday afternoon, August 10. I was scheduled for a performance at 7:00 p.m. and had a few hours to spare. After dropping LWB off at her mother’s house, I headed for the local coffee shop to check email to see what sort of projects and information my editors and publishers had for me. It was nothing but good news, and after a short time of catching up on communications, I headed over the Diamond RV Park.

A lot of people wouldn’t associate an RV park with a performance venue, but this is no ordinary campground. For one thing, they have a great stage in the piney woods at the rear of this spacious layout of several acres. It’s as good as or better than a lot of stages at major venues I’ve played.

For another thing, a large and appreciative crowd can always be depended on to show up – not only people from the park but a bunch of folks from town too.

And for yet another thing, dinner is prepared for entertainers and served by Uncle Roger Mears prior to the show. On this night, about a dozen folks gathered at Roger’s site for a meal of smoked ham and smoked pork ribs along with farmers’ market potatoes, green beans, and more. Uncle Roger is one of the most highly regarded barbeque-meisters in Texas, and therefore the world, and his touch with the smoker and meat is pure magic. So talented is Roger that he is often hired to prepare meals at large functions such as music festivals.

The evening was cool and the show came off great. I was delighted to find a number of friends in the audience. There was Mara Purl, the beautiful television actress from Days of Our Lives, community leader Gayle Gross, Jake Lareau, Joan Wagner, teacher and writer Matt Dyer, Dave Powell, and, of course, Laurie Wagner Buyer, award-winning author.

Late the following morning LWB and I met my agent, Anita Kushen, for lunch on Colorado Springs. Anita snagged the contract with HarperCollins Publishing Company for my memoir which will be released in February 2010. During a meal of fine Mexican food, we discussed real and potential upcoming writing projects. I’ll tell you about them as they begin to materialize.

That evening found me in the Colorado Springs home of the great poet and writer David Mason and his wife Annie. Mason is the author of Ludlow, one of the most amazing books to be published in this country in the past half-century. I’ve read it four times in the past two years. Staying with the Masons was the famous Irish poet, Paddy Bushe. Paddy and his wife were on an extended trip across America. A charming and erudite man, Bushe treated us to a splendid dinner at Jake and Telly’s, the noted Greek restaurant in Colorado Springs. Since Mason lived in Greece and is fluent in the language, he informed and entertained us about the delicious food set at our table.

The night was over too soon, and I had to return to Woodland Park. As good as these past few days were, however, they were about to get better, and I’ll tell you about it in the next blog.
